Objectives and competences

The goal of the subject is to acquire the basic knowledge about functions of police in contemporary societies and to understand the nature of police work. Students understand causes of police deviance. Students acquire knowledge about different police tasks.

- Definition of policing - The history of policing - Alalysis of police work - Contemporary policing - Police and community - Police deviance - Police ethics

Learning and teaching methods

The course will consist of lectures, seminars, discussions, case analyses, individual and group projects, as well as individual consultations with the instructor.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Knowledge and Understanding: Students acquire the basic knowledge about how to perform policing tasks in contemporary societies, understand the nature of different tasks, performed by police and acquire knowledge about the impact of police nature, goals and mentality on the police performance. They understand the nature and causes of police deviance. Transferable/Key Skills and other attributes: Students develop skills to identify problems in the area of policing as well as to design police activities according to contemporary theories of policing.
