Objectives and competences

To enable students to critical evaluate the concepts of organised and planned provision of safety and security and crime prevention and evaluate the application of appropriate preventative measures in specific social conditions.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Criminology; Criminological theory and crime prevention; Typologies of crime prevention; Developmental theories; Situational theories; Crime policy – concept, purpose, goals; National crime prevention and crime control programmes; Recommendations of the Council of Europe on crime prevention; Directions of European institutions for the prevention of specific forms of crime and provision of safety/security; Slovenian practice and research in crime prevention (coordination on a state, regional and local level); Partnership in crime prevention and provision of safety/security; Prevention of specific patterns of crime – social and situational aspects.

Learning and teaching methods

The course will consist of lectures, seminars, discussions, tutorials, case studies, individual and group projects, and individual consultations with the lecturer. Assistant professor will conduct tutorials with the students. Tutorials consist of 4 parts: 1) use of police analytics and crime hotspot analysis using ArcGIS program, 2) study visits to institutions and non-governmental organizations which are active in the field of criminology, crime policy and victimization, 3) excursion to one of the universities in the region where students' conference on crime prevention will be held, 4) analysis of the Resolution on National Programme on the Prevention and Combating of Crime

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

The curse provides students with the knowledge of criminological theories and major theoretical and practical concepts of crime prevention and crime policies, especially so called evidence based crime prevention and crime control policy.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

Through analysis of case studies and work at tutorials, students develop skills for solving problems related to the provision of safety and crime prevention (definition of problem, scanning, analysis, response, assessment).
