Objectives and competences

To learn theoretical and applied methods of research of various security phenomena. To get expediency and skills in approach to research and data analysis by contemporary methods and programmes for data analysis.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Overview of methodolgy in the social sciences and in the field of research of security phenomena. Methodological approcehes to research. Research design. Methods of data collection. Measurement in social sciences. Validity and reability. Sampling theory. Qustionnaie design. Secondary data analysis. Data analysis using nonparametric tests.Multivariate statistical methods. Research using qualitative and quantitative methods.

Learning and teaching methods

Lectures, tutorial with the SPSS, case studies, seminars, discussions and individual research projects.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Students obtain knowledge about research design and planning, and various methods of data analysis and interpretation of results.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

Through different work experiences (case studies, comparative and statistical analysis) , the course enables students to develop complex skills for research and its application in various fields of work (field-operations, security, research …).

Prerequisits

Introductory to descriptive and inferential, uni- and bivariate statistics. Methods of social research (basic). Basic skills in working with a computer.
