Objectives and competences

Goal of the subject is to introduce contemporary concepts and explanations of workplace deviance, using different theories and approaches. Students will understand causes of deviant behavior of employees and get the knowledge for management of workplace deviance.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Theories on aggression • Unwanted behaviour at the workplace o Violence at the workplace (sexual harassment at the workplace) o Aggression at the workplace o Bullying and mobbing at the workplace • Causes of deviant behaviour at the workplace o Personal causes of deviant behaviour - Frustration, depression, cynicism o Organizational causes of deviant behaviour • Early warning signs of workplace deviance • Risks posed by the organization’s environmentLegal Regulation of Deviance in the Workplace (Labour Law Framework) • Management of deviant behaviour at the workplace

Learning and teaching methods

The course will consist of lectures, seminars, discussions, case analyses, individual and group projects, as well as individual consultations with the instructor.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Students acquire knowledge of different types of workplace deviance, understand the causes of this behavior and understand the impact of unwanted behavior on organizational efficiency.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

Using case studies and interpreting empirical results of surveys from the field, students acquire skills to recognize different types of workplace deviance and to plan measures for countering the workplace deviance.
