Objectives and competences

- Understand the connection between international migration, crime and security - Present, explain and critical evaluate integration approaches in Western societies - Equip students with knowledge for research of important social phenomena (e.g. migration), their understanding and application of knowledge to other areas of social research - Understand the broadness of connection between migrations, crime and security issues, which exceeds the stereotypical images presented in media and political discourse.

Content (Syllabus outline)

- International migration in the contemporary world o Basic characteristics of international migrations o Influence of legal and social statuses of migrants on their rights, mobility and integration to society o Theories of migration - Regulation, control and management of international migration (national and supranational approaches) o Transformation of migration to security threats – securitization of migration - International migration and crime o Crime as a cause for migration o Migrants as victims of crime o Crimes of immigrants and their offspring o Hate crimes, (neo)racism, intolerance and discrimination - Integration of immigrants into society o Overview of different integration policies - Global and local total institutions and international migration - Selected cases of crimes connected to international migration o Human trafficking o Migrant workers as victims of exploitation o Structural violence/crime and migration o Penal populism, crime policy, moral panic and migration - Methodological approaches to migration and crime research (qualitative and quantitative research methods)

Learning and teaching methods

Lectures (lecturer and practitioners as guest lectures), tutorials and case studies.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Subject introduces students with an understanding of one of the key characteristics of world, i.e. international migration. We present critical evaluation of their management and control, evaluation of integration policies, and various forms of connection between international migration and crime.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

Students acquire the ability to understand social activities and get methodological knowledge, which enables them empirical research of various social phenomena.
