Objectives and competences

Students are qualified for development of crime investigation and crime reduction strategies. Throughout their specific knowledge in the field of criminal investigation and criminal investigation strategy, and integration of knowledge from other fields, they are able to sort out relevant information, evaluate factors and make critical assessment of analyses.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Terminology and definition of basic concepts • Analysis of important strategic documents • Criminal investigation strategy and problem-solving • Criminal investigation strategic measures (investigation, monitoring and reduction of crime) • The strategy of planning of criminal investigation and crime reduction measures • Analysis of different factors that influence the criminal investigation and crime reduction and their planning • The organisation of criminal police as an essential strategic factor • International efforts for effective criminal investigation and crime reduction on a micro and macro level • Criminal intelligence and intelligence-led policing • Criminal intelligence analysis • Development of investigation and reduction strategies of selected crimes: o Investigation and reduction of suicides in Slovenia o Investigation and reduction of transnational child sexual abuse and child sexual exploitation material o Investigation and reduction of violence against women and men o Investigation and reduction of selected forms of violence in cyberspace o Investigation and reduction of the various forms of human trafficking in Slovenia, Europe and worldwide

Learning and teaching methods

This is a problem-based learning course, which consists of lectures, e-lectures, tutorials, seminars, discussions, video clips, documentary films, group work, oral presentations of selected topics, as well as individual consultations with the lecturer and assistant. Students will write a strategic document of investigation or reduction of a selected form of crime.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Students gain profound knowledge of criminal investigation and crime reduction planning on a micro and macro level, learn about the differences in organization and jurisdiction of different control institutions in the investigation and crime reduction on an international level. They learn how to use different approaches to problem solving, investigation and crime reduction planning, and they learn how to eliminate obstacles that appear in the planning process on a global level. Through the problem-solving processes, they learn how to develop different criminal investigation strategies.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

Students gain skills and capabilities for analysis and evaluation of different strategic factors of criminal investigation. They are trained for independent solving problems of criminal investigation planning, for evaluation of relevant strategic factors from the aspect of SWOT analysis, and for development of different strategic documents in the field of criminal investigation and crime reduction.

Prerequisits

The students should possess or gain knowledge in criminal investigation and forensic sciences, investigation of selected forms of crime, investigative psychology, cybersecurity etc. It is necessary for a student to master at least one foreign language and to be familiar with the internet databases.
