Objectives and competences

To provide students with an understanding of the basic principles of the legal system and the structure of government in the contemporary state, with special emphasis on Slovenia and the EU.

Content (Syllabus outline)

- State and society (introduction) - Constitutive elements of the state - Development and features of the modern state - Organisational and structural features of the modern state - Individual and the state authority (state and the rule of law) - State and law - Globalisation and the changing role of the (post)modern state - European Union as a form of the supranational community - Concept and theories of law (introduction) - Development and features of the (post)modern law - Postmodernization of law - Law and politics - Definition and elements of legal order with special emphasis on the legal order of Slovenia and the EU - Creation, implementation and interpretation of law - Formal and informal dispute resolution - Systemization of law (branches of law) - Constitutional law and the history of constitutionality - Constitutional development in Slovenia - Constitutional order of Slovenia (organisation of the state power) - Basic elements of the EU law

Learning and teaching methods

The course will include lectures, tutorials, and individual consultations with the lecturer.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Students will gain knowledge and understanding of the role and fundamental principles of the rule of law and democracy in modern society. They will also become familiar with the fundamental elements of the legal system and constitutional order of the Republic of Slovenia, as well as the legal arrangement of the European Union.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

The ability to understand the complex structure of the modern legal system, as well as state and supranational organizations. In-depth basic legal knowledge which is essential for the study of criminal justice and security issues within the university study program.
