Objectives and competences
Students acquire the necessary knowledge about different forms and commission of criminal acts, characteristics of criminal offenders, acquire the knowledge needed for the identification of traces, as well as other relevant information for the detection and investigation of crimes, they learn how to plan an investigation and how to cooperate with other experts.
Content (Syllabus outline)
Crime investigation methodology in connection with criminal investigation tactics, technics, strategy.
The methodology of investigating crime: typical forms, identifying differences and their causes.
Detection, investigation and proving of selected forms of crime that represent a threat to individuals and society:
• murders and manslaughters: differential analysis of murder-suicide-accident-natural death, criminal investigation information at the murder crime, particularities in collecting information in manslaughters and missing persons, a role of the forensic medicine expert, investigating infanticide, and the use of police dog;
• forms of violence against children and juveniles: characteristics, forms, indicators, particularities of detection, investigation and evidence collection, the role of the internet;
• violence among adults: characteristics, forms, particularities of detection, investigation and evidence collection, the role of the internet;
• severe forms of sexual offences: rape (detection, investigation measures, proving), child sexual abuse (characteristics, forms, indicators, specifics of detection, investigation and evidence collection);
• crime against property: thefts (pocket thefts, thefts of vehicles, thefts of cultural goods), burglaries, robberies and theft robberies, frauds; modus operandi, typical traces, investigation and evidence collection;
• fires, arsons and explosions: forms, causes, traces on a crime scene, investigating and proving;
• particularities of juvenile crime investigation: characteristics, criminal investigation information at the crime scene indicating that offenders are juveniles;
• crime related to counterfeit medicines: types of counterfeit medicines, characteristics, consequences of counterfeit medicines, ways of productions, selling, online pharmacies, possibilities of detection and investigation;
• human trafficking: forms, characteristics, victims, offenders, detection, investigation, evidence collection.
Learning and teaching methods
The course will consist of lectures, laboratory work, study visits, case analyses and group discussions.
Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
Students will get acquainted with the most typical forms of serious crime, methods of committing it, as well as the used means. They will get familiar with the specifics of crime detection and investigation, and evidence collection in different forms of serious crime.
Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes
Students will develop skills of investigation, analysis and evaluation of crime investigation information that are necessary for crime detection and investigation, and evidence collection in different criminal offences. They will get acquainted with the process of transformation of collected information into proofs.

Prerequisits
Previous knowledge of criminal investigation tactics, forensic sciences, penal law, and criminal procedural law are needed.
Additional information on implementation and assessment Student’s commitments:
A minimum of 80 percent attendance at the tutorial and study visits of the Department for police dog training at the Police academy.
