Objectives and competences

The aim of the subject is to acquire knowledge and skills about the role of police in contemporary societies, and to understand the nature of police work. Students learn the consequences of the nature of police work, forms and causes of police deviance, as well as various concepts of contemporary policing, including the concept of plural policing.

Learning and teaching methods

The course will consist of lectures, seminars, discussions, case analyses, individual and group projects, as well as individual consultations with the instructor.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Students acquire the in-depth knowledge about policing, and advanced knowledge about the operation of police organization in contemporary societies. Using theoretical concepts they can analyse the impact of police nature, goals and mentality on the police efficiency. They get the knowledge to understand and manage different models of policing.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

Students develop advanced skills to identify problems in the area of policing as well as to design and manage police activities according to contemporary theories of policing.
