Objectives and competences

To introduce students to concepts of managing individual and group behavior in organizations. After taking the course, students should be able to recognize and understand human-related problems in organizations, identify concepts applicable to those problems, and apply those concepts in creating a solution for problems, in order to manage organizations successfully. The aim of the subject is to introduce students to some issues regarding human resources in contemporary organization. It analyses the functions of human resources in organizations, especially in security organizations. The subject helps students to understand the concepts in relation to human resource development.

Content (Syllabus outline)

- Organizational Behavior (definition and development; research process in Organizational Behavior; reasons for managing behavior in organizations; specifics of organizational behavior in security organizations) - Individuals in Organizations (the importance of understanding the individuals and their personalities; the importance of understanding the processes of learning, reinforcement in behavioral analyses; organizational applications of theories of motivation – work motivation; job- and organization-related attitudes; transactional analysis) - Groups, Interpersonal Relations and Group Dynamics in Organizations (characteristics of groups in organizations; group dynamics and teamwork; attraction, liking, cooperation and pro-social behavior; conflicts and conflict management, violence in the workplace; power, influence and authority; leadership; decision-making; communication and the levels of interpersonal communication) - HRM as a science and as an organizational function - Job analysis, job design, competences - Planning of human resources and employee development (recruitment, selection, workplace socialization) - Human resource development - Job performance o job evaluation criteria - Law and workplace

Learning and teaching methods

The course will consist of lectures, seminars, discussions, case analyses, individual and group projects, as well as individual consultations with the instructor. Part of the course conducted in the form of e-lectures.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Knowledge and Understanding: The course is designed to provide understanding, interpretation, and utilization of human-behavior-relevant concepts of management, psychology, sociology, social psychology, political sciences and anthropology. The students get the knowledge about development of human resource management, about functions of human resource management in contemporary organization and knowledge about interdependence of this subject with other issues in security organizations. Transferable/Key Skills and other attributes: Through case studies and experiential exercises, the course enables students to develop analytical, problem-solving and social skills (working with individuals and groups in organizations). Students develop skills of employee recruitment, and selection, appraisal of job performance and planning of human resource development in contemporary security organizations.
