Objectives and competences

To enable students to critical evaluate the theoretical concepts of penology, implementation of criminal sanctions and the position of a prisoner in the criminal justice system.

Content (Syllabus outline)

- Historical development of penology. - Theories on the aims of punishment. - Public opinion and punishment. - Contemporary ideology of punishment and practical consequences. - Prison – forms and contextual content; treatment. - Recidivism. - Stigma and shaming. - Electronic monitoring. - Incarceration of the elderly. - Prison privatisation. - Prison workers. - Relations in the prison environment. - Prison subculture. - Slovene penal practice and penal policy.

Learning and teaching methods

- The course will consist of lectures, discussions, tutorials, case studies, individual and group projects, and individual consultations with the lecturer. The tutorials will be conducted with the students.

The course provides students with the knowledge of theoretical concepts of penology and their implementation in practice.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

Through analysis of case studies and work at tutorials, students acquire knowledge in the fields of enforcement of criminal sanctions, evaluation of contemporary forms of punishment and work with prisoners, and analysis of penal statistics.
