Objectives and competences
The course covers topics that illustrate the origins and development of European security architecture, the process of shaping security policies within international organizations such as the United Nations (UN), NATO, the Council of Europe, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), and the European Union (EU), as well as mechanisms of security provision at the global and international levels.
Content (Syllabus outline)
• Historical circumstances of the foundation and development of European Union, its organisation and the role of its institutions, legal order of EU
• Foundations of common foreign and security policy of EU, justice and internal affairs
• Security strategy of EU: principles and strategic directions
• Free movement of persons, asylum system and immigration policy of EU
• Justice, police and customs cooperation between the members of EU
• Measures of EU for prevention and combating organised crime
• The role of global in regional international political and security organisations and international initiatives in the field of prevention and combating different forms of threats to international community: UN, OSCE, Council of Europe, NATO, etc.
Learning and teaching methods
The course will consist of lectures, tutorials, discussions, case studies, individual projects, as well as individual consultations with the instructor.
Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
Students understand the basics of the functioning of international organizations such as the United Nations (UN), NATO, the Council of Europe (SE), the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), and the European Union (EU) (institutional structure, decision-making proces, legal framework).
Students are familiar with fundamental security policies and mechanisms, as well as the role of these international organizations in addressing current security issues (e.g., terrorism, crime, migration, conflicts, etc.).
Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes
The case studies and individual work students develop critical thinking skills to evaluate the capabilities of the international community in addressing the needs of contemporary society in complex security environment.
