Objectives and competences

To enable students to understand the concept and the role of green criminology and crimes against the environment and the functioning of the police and the nature of police work by the investigation of environmental crime. Furthermore, the course enables students to develop their skills for defining problems in the field of environmental protection and know the aspects of planning the possible preventive and repressive solutions.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Introduction to environmental crime o The definition of environmental crime o The forms of environmental crime Introduction to green criminology o Green criminology - the study of environmental crime o The development of green criminology throughout history (case of Slovenia) Responding to threats against the environment and environmental protection policy o Criminal justice and security aspects of environmental crime (national security aspect, legal aspect, criminal investigation aspect, psychological aspect, crime-prevention aspect).

Learning and teaching methods

The course will consist of lectures, seminars, discussions, case studies, individual and group projects, and individual consultations with the professor. Assistant conducts coursework and study visits (police, inspectorate, NGO) with the students.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

The curse introduces students to major basic theoretical and practical concepts of green criminology and environmental crime groups and forms.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

Through case studies and tutorials, the course enables students to develop skills for understanding environmental crime and as well as the purpose of green criminology at responding to environmental harm.
