Objectives and competences
The student will:
• use professional communication with patients, family, and in the multidisciplinary team.
• Use techniques of therapeutic communication.
• Develops communication techniques, and assertive and empathic communication for providing caring nursing.

• Language and cultural barriers in communication in healthcare.
• Cultural diversity and communication in health care.
• Ensuring patient safety in healthcare communicationUse of different communication tools in nursing and midwifery (SIOP communication tool).
Learning and teaching methods
Lectures with active student participation (explanation, discussion, questions, examples, problem solving).
Seminar project work, team work, critical thinking methods, discussion, feedback, role-plays and scenario preparation and solving).
Individual consultations (discussion, further explanation, addressing specific issues).
Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
• explain the principles of professional communication,
• perform assertive and therapeutic communication for safe and ethical work,
• differentiate between different communication techniques, considering cultural and linguistic barriers,
• explain the importance of ensuring patient safety through respect for the cultural diversity of the patient by using different communication tools .

At the end of the unit, the student will be able to:
• use national and international literature and other sources of data collection and interpretation,
• communicate and establish good interpersonal relationships,
• identify and solve problems through communication,

A pass grade in the course is based on a minimum pass grade of 55 % in the computer exam.
