Objectives and competences

Students: • understand some key psychological theories and models relevant to nursing care, • understand the interaction of biological, social and psychological factors in health and illness, • develop basic skills (listening, acceptance, empathy, response, conflict resolution ...) needed to work effectively in nursing care, • learn and understand the patient's expected reaction and the importance of psychological preparation to assist the patient's medical treatment, • develop skills of reflection and self-control of one’s own thinking, experience and behaviour in different situations.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Basic psychological terms, concepts and theories relevant to nursing care (behavioural, cognitive, humanistic, interpersonal, theories of learning). • emotional, motivational psychological process • Conceptions of health and illness (anthropological, biological, psychological, biopsychosocial model of health and illness). • The psychology of pain. • The concept of self and body image. • Stress and coping. • Development and loss of social relationships (attachment theory, life transitions, loss and grief...). • Social processes and their importance for nursing care.

Learning and teaching methods

Lectures, seminar work, role-playing, demonstrations, group work.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

• explain the basic psychological concepts and the importance of psychology in nursing care, • describe and explain key approaches to understanding human behaviour, • use multiple social skills in dealing with patients, • assess the patient's problems and offer support in finding solutions, and help determine when a psychologist is necessary, • explain the advantages of the biopsychosocial model of health and illness, • critically reflects on their attitudes and practices in different situations and nursing practice. •

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

Students apply the acquired knowledge to nursing practice.

Prerequisits

The condition for the admission to the written examination is the completed seminar work.
