Objectives and competences

Student will: • understand the changes in age and the characteristic of aging, • be able to explain the changes associated with aging, • understand the importance of active and quality aging, • understand the most common problems and chronic diseases in old age, • understand the importance of rehabilitation in old age, • understand the importance of intergenerational relationships, • understand the specialties of nursing care for people with dementia, • understand the purpose of palliative care.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Aging and age-related changes. • Quality of life in old age. • Active aging. • Specific features of communication with older people. • Specifics of rehabilitation of the older people. • Prevention and recognition of violence in old age. • The most common chronic diseases in old age. • Special features of care and support for older people. • Palliative care. • Nurses' role with people with dementia. • Intergenerational cooperation.

Lectures, Seminar work, Discussion, group work, written assignement.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Upon completion of the learning unit, the student will be able to: • describe and explain the characteristics of ageing and care for quality and active ageing, • explain the specifics of nursing care for an individual with dementia, • describe and explain with an example the purpose of palliative care, • describe and explain with an example the purpose of palliative care, describe and explain the most common problems and diseases of old age.

Argumentation skills, team work skills, ability to work as a team.
