Objectives and competences

Students: • learn about the role importance of ethics, philosophy and morale in nursing, • Capable of critical consideration of ethical issues in nursing practice. • know and understand the basic principles of the Code of ethics for nursing care and include them in clinical practice as a guideline for their activities. • Learn about the competencies and responsibilities of their profession. • Knows how the EU works and the importance of legislation in the nursing field. • Acquire knowledge of the basic concepts of nursing law, labour law and healthcare law.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Basic concepts of ethics, philosophy and morals. • Ethics as a philosophical discipline and her historical background. • Legal beginnings in nursing. • Bioethics and historical background. • Moral development theory. • Nursing ethics and historical background. • Philosophical orientations and their influence on the development of ethics (utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics, ethics of care). • Basic ethical principles, fundamental human rights, and freedoms at national and international level. • Transfer of ethical principles and theories to key ethical issues from a nursing perspective - examples: • ART and termination of pregnancy, • euthanasia, • organ transplant and tissue and cell donation, • genetic testing, • ethical-religious conflicts, • life-and-death decisions, • mental health, • long-term care. • Ethical principles in nursing care practice. • Ethical responsibility in health practice. • Codes, declarations and documents in health practice. • Principles of the Code of ethics for nursing care of Slovenia. • Ethical problems and dilemmas in nursing (ethical decision-making process). • Fundamentals of legal systems with selected topics in European Union law. • Legal aspects of health care and nursing, the practice of health care professional qualifications. • Legal regulation, rights and obligations under health insurance. • Legal and ethical responsibility in nursing. • Legal Systems, European Union law, familiarization with the directives on the rising demand for nursing care. • Legal aspects of health care and nursing practice of medicine professional qualifications. • Outline of patient's rights in the line of Patien's Rights Act and other relevant acts, which are connected with the area of healthcare. • The basics of enforcing and dealing with breaches of patients' rights under the ZPacP and in court proceedings. • Presentation of the possibilities for enforcement and treatment of the patient's rights, especially in the procedures foreseen in Patient's Rights Act and judicial procedures. • Collective agreements between nursing personnel.

Learning and teaching methods

The following learning methods are used: lectures, seminar work, written text work, demonstrations, group work, analysis of legal cases, role-playing

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Student will be able to: • explain the role and importance of ethics in nursing care, • explain basic concepts and principles of the Code of Ethics in nursing care of Slovenia and consider them at work in a clinical environment, • recognize the most common ethical problems and dilemmas and act upon them in nursing practice, • describe and apply the process of ethical decision-making in specific situations, • explain the functioning of the legal system in the EU and Slovenia, • explain the basics of health legislation, especially about patient's rights that students will be confronted with in their work, explain the basic legal concepts related to nursing and the health professions.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

• Argumentation skills, • team work skills, • ability to critically reflect on 'sone's own work.

Prerequisits

The written examination requires 80% attendance at the seminars and a passing grade in the seminar paper.
