Objectives and competences

Students will improve (upgrade) their knowledge in the English language related to the professional field of midwifery, nursing and general health. Students will improve (upgrade) their oral and written communication skills in English for the purpose of study and work in their chosen professional field and for their continuous professional development. The objective of this course is to consolidate, revise and expand students’ existing knowledge of the English level at an advanced level, to develop the ability of the students to understand different English speakers and texts in a variety of contexts at an advanced level and to systematically build vocabulary. The objective of the course is to also equip students with the skills to participate in debates and discussion, and to guide students to the accurate use of pronunciation, intonation and English in general.

Content (Syllabus outline)

The professional field of midwifery and nursing care, the role and competences of the nurse in modern society and health care, • development of professional vocabulary in key areas of midwifery and nursing (collocations, word formation, phraseology), • practice and development of general language knowledge and skills, • development of techniques for effective reading and writing: using headlines and keywords, skimming, writing brief notes and summaries, writing reports and documenting,using advanced information and communication technology for the purpose of obtaining data and information and communication in the field of nursing and general health.

Learning and teaching methods

Classroom teaching and learning are based on the principles of the communicative approach and content-based teaching and learning. Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

By the end of the course, students are able to: • select and use appropriate professional terminology in the field of midwifery and nursing, and use dictionaries and other sources of information, • form (build) and use appropriate oral and written texts to successfully communicate in the English language in their work-related and professional field of midwifery and nursing, • think analytically upon evaluation of recordings and written texts (critical reading and listening).

• ability to work in pairs and groups, • ability to use up-to-date sources of information and technology, • recognition of the need and willingness to continually develop existing skills and knowledge due to the ever-changing nature of language, • ability to become an autonomous learner, • ability to independently develop research strategies and problem-solving techniques, • knowledge of how to react in conflict situations, • ability to analyze and bring together ideas, • ability to work in a multilingual and multicultural environment.

Prerequisits

Prerequisites for enrollment in the course: English language skills at secondary school level. Prerequisites for successful completion of the course: Before taking the written exam, students have to achieve the 80% attendance and active participation, as well as fulfill all other individual requirements listed in the Assessment box.
