Objectives and competences

Students will: • develop knowledge in the field of intensive care nursing area • learn the approach to treating a critically ill patient, • learn about interventions to manage infections and complications in a patient on artificial ventilation

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Basic aspects of nursing in intensive care unit • Patient admission in intensive care unit • Monitoring • Artificial ventilation and management of intubated patient • Pain management in intensive care unit • Communication with patient on artificial ventilation • Management of hospital infections in intensive care unit • Documentation in intensive care unit • Sedation, relaxation and analgesia in the intensive care unit (BIS monitoring) • Intensive care after CPR • Therapeutic hypothermia • ECMO • Intensive care of patient with sepsis and multiple organ failure • Transport of the critically ill patient • Ethical and legal issues in intensive care unit

Learning and teaching methods

Lectures:with active participation of students (explanation, discussion, evidence based learning, questions, cases). Seminar: teamwork, critical thinking models, discussion, feed back) Individual consultation: (discussion, additional explanation, specific questions).

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Students will be able to: • Explain the importance of maintaining an open airway • Explain the specific measurements and monitoring in the intensive care unit Describe and explain the particularities of of handling with vascular catheters • understood infections control measures in intensive care unit • to recognize complications and be capable of taking steps in accordance with the skills they have learned.
