Objectives and competences
Student:
-know the concept of intellectual/ learning disability
- know and learn psychological, communication and pragmatic skills of working with people with intellectual/learning disabilities across different developmental stages.
Content (Syllabus outline)
Indicative content:
1. Introduction - characteristics and basic definitions of certain disabilities (definition, history and degree of learning disability).
2. Diagnosing learning disability, conditions, disorders and related co-morbidities and development of disability across lifespan (basic personal, emotional, behaviour characteristics)
3. The causes and presentations of mental health problems in people with learning disabilities.
4. Learning disability and additional needs and their impact on health, care and social skills - e.g. epilepsy, challenging behaviour, dementia etc
5. Communication skills (with an emphasis on empathic and respectful communication), characteristics of scientifically proven therapeutic approaches and strategies (“evidence-based") and the person-centered approach to care
6. Self-awareness, self-reflection, personal and professional development of people that work with individuals with learning disabilities.
7. Ethical issues
Seminar:
Student chooses from the set of the topic for their project work, which is then appropriately presented and advocated.

The student will be able to :
1. Identify principles and concepts of learning disability and working with people with intellectual/ learning disability.
2. Explain the history, definitions, causes and manifestations of intellectual/learning disability
3. Explain the purpose, principles and processes of person-centred approach.
4. Know the range of mental health problems that can affect people with learning disability.
5. Use different approaches that can be used for people with intellectual/learning disabilities and mental health needs including psychological interventions and promoting positive mental health.
6. Take measures in ethical issues in caring for a person with intellectual;/learning disabilities
