Objectives and competences

Student will: • understand research paradigms, philosophies of science, methodologies and methods of qualitative and quantitative research and definitions of mixed methods research, •be able to plan and execute qualitative and quantitative research in the field of nursing and health care, • be able to effectively present, disseminate and evaluate the results of research, • understand the meaning of science and discipline for development of nursing care practice. • Understand the ethical aspects of research

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Philosophy of science for supporting qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research. • Justifying the paradigm, methodology and research methods in nursing. • Defining the qualitative, quantitative methodology and methods and mixed methods research. • Description of qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research process. • Methods of data collection and analysis within qualitative and quantitative research. • Defining the discipline and science of nursing. • Research ethics.

Learning and teaching methods

Lectures (auditory and e-lectures), Seminars (auditory and e-seminars), tutorials 80% attendance is required for seminars and tutorials

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Student: • explain research paradigms, philosophy of sciences, methodologies and methods in nursing and health care; • explain the meaning and characteristics of research and research work for nursing; • perform a systematic review of the literature on the selected topic • design a research problem, aim, objectives and hypotheses in quantitative research; • formulate a research question in qualitative research; • design qualitative research and justify methodology, methods and ethical aspects • carry out qualitative research and evaluate and interpret results • defend presentation of the research work.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

• information gathering, • use of information technology: use programs tools for preparing and editing documents, presentations and citation, • writing research reports and scientific articles, • verbal communication skills: presentation of the project.

Prerequisits

Prerequisites for taking the course: None. Conditions for fulfilling study obligations: Active participation in a seminar and project presentation. 80% attendance is required for seminars.
