Objectives and competences

Student will • get familiar with nursing theories and concepts and their analysis and evaluation, • understand the connection between theory and practice and selection and application of theory in practice, • understand philosophy and science of nursing, • be able to analyse the concepts in nursing, • be able to describe, analyse and evaluate nursing theories.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Science and discipline of nursing. • Development science of nursing. • Nursing' fundamental patterns of knowing. • Interpretative paradigm. • Profession, practice and art of nursing. • The characteristic of nursing profession. • Development the theory of nursing. • Theories and conceptual models. • Description, analysis and evaluation of nursing theories. • The criteria for theory analysis. • The importance of theory on practice of nursing. • Criteria for theory application. • Concepts of nursing. • Criteria for concept analysis. • Selection the theory for practice. • Integration of theory, practice and research. • Watson's theory of caring.

Learning and teaching methods

• Lecturers (auditory and e-lectures) • Seminars: group work (auditory and e-seminars) • Turorial • At least 80 % participation is required at the seminars and tutorials.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Student: • Interpret development, structure and function of theory. • Describe, analyse and evaluate nursing theory using a selected model and criteria. • Use the model for theory description, analysis and evaluation for selected theory. • Analyse selected concept. • Explain nursing as a profession and as discipline. • Explain the science and art of nursing care.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

- information gathering, - use of information technology: use programs tools for preparing and editing documents, presentations and citation, - writing research reports and scientific articles, - verbal communication skills: presentation of the project.

Prerequisites for taking the course: None. Conditions for fulfilling study obligations: Active participation in tutorial and project preparation. At least 80 % participation is required at the seminars and tutorials.
