Objectives and competences

Student will be able: • to discuss about the nature of evidence in nursing and health care, • to differentiate between systematic review and single studies, • to formulate specific clinical/research question (e.g. PICOT), • able to find appropriate evidence to address a specific research question, • evaluate the quality of quantitative and qualitative evidence, • able to interpret the findings and propose changes for nursing and health care practice, • able to discuss about facilitators and barriers of evidence based nursing.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Debates about the nature of evidence in nursing and health care practice. Evidence based practice process and Evidence based method. Identification of PICOT (Patient Intervention Comparison Outcome Time) and others research questions Systematic searching of relevant and appropriate evidence. Critical appraisal of quantitative and qualitative evidence. Implementation of evidence and evaluation of outcomes. The science of implementation and promotion of evidence based practice.

Learning and teaching methods

Blended learning with elements of flipped learning, work in groups, individual form of work, method of explanation, conversation and demonstration as well as reading and working with the text.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

On completion of this course the student will be able to: • explain EBP process and method, • formulate the research question using PICOT model, • design search strategy to address a specific PICOT question, • search relevant evidence to address a specific PICOT question, • critically appraise the quality of a range of evidence, • classify evidence in a hierarchy of evidence, • interpret findings in order to inform nursing and health care practice, • explain facilitators and barriers in evidence based nursing.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

• gathering and evaluation of information: searching of relevant evidence and its critical evaluation • work in a team • writing research reports • verbal communication skills: presentation of the project.
