Objectives and competences

Student will be able to: Understand the basic principles and current issues in organization and management, and the basic principles of quality in health care, with the emphasis on patient safety. Determine the modern, strategic risk management methods, measures and steps for the handling of quality indicators.

Content (Syllabus outline)

The subject systematically addresses risk management in health and social organisations. The content is integrated at four levels: health care system, health care organization, health care team, and the individual. The content of the subject is always applied to the organizational system and management of health and social organisations. Students gain in-depth knowledge from risk management in health and social organisations. Introduction to management: the definition and the basic function of management, types of management, the basics of patient safety. Modern, strategic approaches to risk management: Risk treatment Risk assessment Risk identification Risk assessment Risk assessment, Risk matrix, Risk management. Measures (preventive, corrective, corrective). Risk management in practice. Steps in the development of national quality indicators in health and social organisations. EN 15224 is a European standard for quality management in healthcare.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

On completion of this course the student will be able to: • define management in health care, continuous quality improvement, and patient safety in reference to nursing. • to independently assess the risk situation in health care for the fields covered in the course, and present their own opinions and results. • understand the interconnectedness of roles such as preventive, corrective and corrective actions. • define efficiency and performance in management. • define the systemic approach to quality and patient safety improvement. • explainthe concepts and definitions of quality and patient safety. • implementing changes.
