Objectives and competences

Student will: - gain knowledge, understanding and the ability to assess emegrency situations in intensive care medicine, - gain knowledge and understanding of treatments in intensive care medicine, and finally to be able to analyze and synthesize data - independently in research projects of this area of medicine, which at the end can improve clinical work and further research of this area of medicine.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Methods of early recognition, emergency measures and treatments in medical intensive care emergencies such as: - acute respiratory inssuficiency, acute heart faiure, including pumonary edema and cardiogenic shock, acute coronary myocardial infarctions with and without ST-segment elevation, different shocks (obstructive, anaphylactic, septic, hemorrhagic, etc.), severe arterial hypertension and hypertensive crisis,, bradiacardias and tachiarrhythmias, massive an submassive pulmonary embolism, acute renal failure, hypoglicemia and hyperglicaemia, metabolic and respiratory acidosis and alkalosis, hyperkalemia and hypokalemia, hypothermia, acute poisonings and coma, acute gastrointestinal bleedings, acute hepatic failure, etc. Among methods the emphasis will be upon ? emergency laboratory methods, electrocardiography, insertion of arterial, central venous catheters, measurements of systemic arterial, central venous, pulmonary artery and pulmonary wedge pressure, maintanace of airway and basic principles of mechanical ventilation, echocardiography, emergency electrostimulation. - The possibiliy of independent research in the field of emergency situations in medical intensive care will be ecourraged, as well as to correlate results gained by different biotechnological methods (laboratory markers, electrocardiography, blood pressure measurements, etc.) to specific emergency states in medical intensive care.

Learning and teaching methods

- Lectures (auditory and e-lectures), seminars (auditory and e-seminrs), but mostly individual work. - Regular oral examinations, combined with seminars after completed individual work - Presentation of results at conferences as oral or poster presentations, articles

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

On completion of this course the student will be able to: - explain and compare pathophysiological mechanims of frequent emergency situations in intensive care medicine - analyze clinical picture of frequent conditions in intensive care - interprate diagnostic and effective contemporary treatment methods in emergency situations in intensive care medicine

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

Knowledge and understanding: Of pathophysiological mechanims of certain most frequent and most important emergency medical conditons in critical care in order to better recognize and treat critically-ill, the ability of autonomuos research
