Objectives and competences

Student will be able to: - gain the basic paradigms and basic counseling approaches, - carry out basic counseling skills, - distinguish between different models and methods to offer support and motivate the patient, - send the patient for professional psychological or psychiatric help for their problems.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Indicative content: 1. Introduction to counseling - history of counselling , theories of counselling, development of different techniques, review of different models. 2. Characteristics of individual counseling - the importance of the therapeutic relationship, using different techniques, the importance of compassionate counseling / relationship. 3. Group counseling - basic characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, group counseling techniques. 4. Counseling work with patients, families - characteristics, techniques, methods of direct approach, providing psychosocial support during rehabilitation. 5. Counseling work with other health professionals - providing support for employees, creating the supportive atmosphere in the team, assisting in the planning and evaluation of their work. 6. Planning and evaluation of counseling. 7. Ethical principles of counseling - basic professional ethics, the importance of interdisciplinary integration. Work: To practice practical ways of building relationships, listening techniques, counseling and planning consultancy.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

1. On completion of this course the student will be able to: Show fundamental skills of empathy, active listening, treatment planning. 2. Show development of a strong therapeutic alliance with patients. 3. Explain the theories of counselling 4. Discuss the interdisciplinary relationship in the health care setting 5. Discuss ethical implications involved in counselling

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

The ability to effectively use the acquired knowledge in practical work with patients, their relatives and co-workers.

Prerequisites for taking the course: None. Conditions for fulfilling study obligations: Active participation in a seminar and passing grade of seminar work are required for taking the written exam.
