Objectives and competences

Understanding the importance of nutraceuticals in medicine and their role in medicine. The student can define and classify individual nutraceutics and define their role in metabolism and antioxidant protection of the organism. The student can advise individual dietary supplements according to individual indications and needs. The student knows the legislation regulating the market for food supplements.

Content (Syllabus outline)

- Type of nutrition: balanced, safe, recommended, alternative nutrition, clinical nutrition (enteral and parenteral nutrition) - Nutraceutics – definition, sorts, importance for health - Vitamins - Elements in traces - Antioxidants -Functional foods - Deficiency status - Nutrition additives - Additives and contaminants in nutrition - Nutrition habits and bad habits - Dietary products - Dietary supplements available on the market - Comparative and critical analysis of food supplements available on the domestic market. - Food supplements market legislation.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Knowledge and understanding: The aim of the subject is to gain an insight into nutraceuticals, functional foods and nutritional supplements that are available on the domestic market and understand their way of action. To know the indications for their use and performance and effects on health. To know which supplements to advise as individual dietary supplements for prevention and treatment in various diseases.
