Objectives and competences

Student will: - acquire the basic knowledge in the field of addiction, - get familiar with diagnostic criteria (understanding the spectrum of addiction from mild to severe disorder), - know psychoactive substances and their effects, - get familiar with the most common physical complications and comorbid mental disorders, - understand addiction emergencies, - know the treatment programs in the Republic of Slovenia, harm reduction programs, self-help groups, therapeutic communities, - understand basics of pharmacotherapy, - get familiar with consulting techniques, - get familiar with motivational interviewing.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Basics of addiction disorder, subtypes. Neurobiology of addiction. Etiology of addiction. Somatic consequences of addiction, psychiatric comorbidity. Treatment of addiction. The stigma of addiction.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Knowledge and understanding: On completion of this course the student will be able to: - identify a patient with the problem of addiction, - lead basic motivational conversation, basic counselling, and support, - act in emergency treatment, - identify the complications of addiction that require immediate treatment and the ability to properly target them, infectious diseases, - suggest basic orientation in seeking help, - define basic knowledge of treatment programs, - define basics of pharmacotherapy.

Prerequisites for taking the course: None. Conditions for fulfilling study obligations: Active participation in a tutorial and preparation of seminar work are required for taking the oral exam. Attendance is checked.
