Objectives and competences

The student will: - be aware of current and expected environmental changes, - be able to find international institutions that deal with environmental changes and adapting to them, - understand the impact of climate disasters and extreme weather events on public health, - understand the impact of environmental changes on air quality, food security and malnutrition, - understand the impact of environmental changes on society: migration, worse hygienic conditions, and the spread of disease, - understand the impact of environmental changes on the hydrological cycle, the lack of drinking water, water-borne diseases, and the loss of biodiversity, - be aware of the importance of healthcare and healthcare workers in the fight against environmental changes.

Content (Syllabus outline)

1. Presentation of environmental changes and predicted changes in the future. 2. International institutions, global governance and adaptation to environmental changes. 3. Climatic disasters and extreme weather events and their impact on public health. 4. Impact of environmental changes on air quality, food safety and malnutrition. 5. The impact of environmental changes on society: migration, worse hygienic conditions, and the spread of diseases. 6. Impact of environmental changes on the hydrologic cycle, lack of drinking water and waterborne diseases. 7. The impact of environmental changes on the loss of biodiversity. 8. The importance of healthcare and healthcare workers in the fight against environmental changes and the resilience of healthcare systems.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Knowledge and understanding On completion of this course the student will be able to: - identify evidence and future predictions regarding environmental change, - choose and find international institutions in the field of environmental changes, - understand the impact of a climate disaster and extreme weather events on public health, - define the impact of environmental changes on the air quality, food security and malnutrition, - understand the impact of environmental changes on society: migration, worse hygienic conditions, and the spread of disease, - define the impact of environmental changes on the hydrological cycle, the lack of drinking water, water-borne diseases and on the loss of biodiversity, - define the importance of healthcare and healthcare workers in the fight against environmental changes.
