Objectives and competences
The student will:
- mastered the concepts of mental health, mental well-being, mental health problems and mental disorders,
- learn about the diagnostic categorization of mental disorders,
- get to know the risks of choking disorders and the recovery process,
- get acquainted with explanatory models in the field of mental health,
- met the therapeutic alliance for the involvement of patients in the nursing process,
- get acquainted with mental health assessment tools,
- get acquainted with legal issues regarding decision-making power and mental health legislation.
Content (Syllabus outline)
Concepts of mental health/mental illness, mental disorders categorisation, risk for development of mental disorders, recovery; interpersonal relations; therapeutic alliance for engaging patients in assessment; formulation; mental health assessment tools; risk assessment tools; legal issues around competence to make decisions, mental health legislation, vulnerability; ethical and professional challenges and opportunities when working with families and carers.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
By the end of this course student will be able to:
• Critique key concepts in mental health including mental health/illness, diagnostic processes and categorisation, risk, and a range of explanatory models in relation to development of holistic mental health assessment in the context of Recovery.
• Critically analyse the roles of health professional, service user, family and carers in the process of developing a collaborative formulation of the person’s main mental health issues and the impact of these in their daily life, in the context of Recovery focused care.
• Demonstrate critical understanding and development of therapeutic alliance in the process of engaging patients in holistic assessment, formulation, and the exploration of attitudes towards treatment options including medication and psychological treatments.
• Evaluate the usefulness of a range of frameworks and tools for mental health assessment and demonstrate the ability to apply these effectively to gather person-centred information.
• Analyse the ethical, legal and professional issues associated with mental health assessment and treatment.
