Objectives and competences
The aim of the course is to help students reflect upon, systematize and critically assess different aspects of their own professional, ethical and social experience: their judgments, feelings, decisions and actions as well as sharpen their moral sensitivity and capacity for moral judgment, with the aim of improving their ability to identify and solve ethical and social issues and dilemmas that typically arise in their professional settings. The aim is also the instalation of upbringing and education of child in social occurrence.
Content (Syllabus outline)
• Basic ethical and sociological concepts of values in education: responsibility, good, evil, right, wrong, rights, duties, interest, harm, dignity, happiness,…
• Ethical dilemas in relation to educational sistems; to education and upbringing aims and contents; to upbringing and educational methods.
• Teacher and educator: a role model vs. authority.
• Ethical and social conflicts in and outside of classroom.
• Concepts and principles on which the professional codes of ethics of teachersshould be based: conflicts of interest and exploitation; - social responsibility; avoiding harm; privacy and confidentiality; deception; protection and publication of data.
Learning and teaching methods
• Problem-based lectures;
• connecting of informatie and problems' aspect;
• critical analysis and interpretation of texts;
• asking questions, testing ideas, claims and distinctions:
• reconstruction and evaluation of arguments:
• use of thought-experiments and imagined scenarios as a way of testing general moral principles and theories;
• student paper presentations;
• homework and research of case studies in practice.
Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
By the end of the course the student will be able to
• master basic ethical and social concepts, principles and theories;
• be able to tell good arguments apart from bad ones;
• be able to discuss, in a more consistent, reflective and informed way;
• articulate, classify, evaluate and make sense of his or her own professional experience,
• form reliable judgments and solve work-related moral dilemmas.
