Objectives and competences

The objective of this course is to upgrade, to expand foreign language structures, and professional language and vocabulary in English, related to contents from pedagogical/educational issues, and to acquire strategies for classroom work relevant to future primary school teachers. Students are able to interpret and critically analyse professional texts in English (oral and written, related to contents from educational issues), prepare short presentations, and independently solve assignments in English. Students become aware of intercultural understanding in teaching English in primary school.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Discussion, interpretation and critical discourse about different authentic texts with the intention to broaden English vocabulary, language structures and pronunciation; authentic texts include educational contents with which primary/elementary teachers are confronted in everyday situations or during instruction, and are otherwise interesting to learners/pupils; • Discussion and improvement of communication skills in English from education and solving creative, interactive foreign language activities in suitable classroom situations; • The use of ICT and systems from the pedagogical /educational area.

• Interactive lectures, • work with texts, • tutorial, • individual assignments, • problem-solving, • discussion/debate, • presentations, • simulation, • role playing, • e-learning.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

On completion of this course the student will be able to • (individually, in pairs or groups) use professional foreign language, vocabulary and language structures in contents connected to pedagogical/educational issues for primary school teachers, • prepare short spoken and written presentations about different pedagogical/educational topics of interest for classroom use, • manage classroom activities effectively in English, public speaking, • critically analyse foreign language contents useful to them as future primary school teachers.

Prerequisits

Accomplished obligations during tutorials and lectures are a prerequisite for taking the written exam.
