Objectives and competences

The objectives of the course are for a student to: - understand and apply a holistic approach when planning and implementing work with an athlete, - know the personality traits of the athletes that affect his/her athletic work, - know the basic principles of learning process and to apply them in his/her work with athletes, - know and appy methods to achieve optimal athlete arousal, - plan work and to help to create circumstances that have a positive effect on the development of athlete's skills and competences necessary for sports success, - know and apply basic psychological knowledge to optimize athlete's work, - reflect his/her behaviour and to modify it to be more effective for the athlete's development, - increase mental health literacy, - develop an understanding of the role of psychological health as a component of a healthy lifestyle. - Strengthen competences to support mental health across the life course. - Understand motivation, self-esteem and stress in an interdisciplinary way.

Content (Syllabus outline)

- Definition of sport psychology as a scientific field - Holistic approach in working with athletes - Personality and sport: definition, structure and characteristics of personality, the impact of personality characteristics on sports performance - Athelete's identity and self-image - Motivation: definition and central theories of motivation, the impact of motivation on sports performance - Activation, stress, and anxiety - Fundamental psychological principles in learning and coaching process - Psychological skills and competences needed for success in sport - Applying the basic sport-psychological lessons for optimizing sports performance - Athletes' mental health, the role of the coach in promoting athletes' mental health, coping with sports injuries, athletic career termination - Mental health in sport as a basis for a sustainable approach to training. - Taking into account the differences between target groups (young, adults, elderly, recreational)

Interactive lecture, discussion, reflection, case study, role play.

- Understanding and applying a holistic approach when working with an athlete. - Understanding the role of athlete's personality traits in sports work. - Knowing the principles of athletic identity developmenz and the factors that affect his/her self-image. - Understanding of social and emotional factors for effective sports work and learning. - Understanding and applying methods of promoting optimal activation for athlete performance. - Knowing the athlete's skills and competencies that affect his/her athletic success. - Knowing and applying basic sport-psychological knowledge to optimize sports performance and promote athletes' mental health.
