Objectives and competences

The objective of this course is to bring English legal terminology and specifics of communication in English legal language closer to law students.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Introduction to English Legal Terminology • Legal Systems • Comparative Law • Sources of Law • State Organization • A Career in Law • Court System • Alternative Dispute Resolution • Civil Procedure • European Union Law • International Law and Human Rights • Contract Law • Tort Law • Family and Inheritance Law • Criminal Law • Employment Law • Competition Law • Consumer Law • Company Law • Commercial Law • Use of digital tools in the translation of legal texts.

Learning and teaching methods

• Lectures • Seminars • Tutorials: reading and writing of legal texts, presentation of legal topics. Part of the tutorial is in a classroom while the rest is in the form of e-learning (e-tutorials may be given via video-conferencing or with the help of specially designed e-material in a virtual electronic learning environment).

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Knowledge and Understanding: Upon the completion of this course a student will be: • Familiar with English legal terminology in certain fundamental legal fields; • Capable of reading English legal texts; • Qualified to write legal texts in English. • Able to use digital tools in translating legal texts. Transferable/Key Skills and other attributes: • Advanced level of oral and written communication in legal English: understanding and presentation of information in common legal situations.
