Content (Syllabus outline)
Causes of mobility - human activities and locations.
Travel behavior – definition and measurement:
number of trips, length of the trip, purpose of the trip, mandatory and optional trips, travel time.
Value of time and willingness to pay for travel time savings.
Elements that influence travel behavior (age, gender, status, family/household, disabilities, culture).
Types of transport means and their characteristics: "legs", bicycle, public transport, private car, bus, train, cable car. Organizational options: private and public, sharing and pooling.
Properties of each mode of travel: speed, range, energy consumption, safety regulations.
Properties of the infrastructure for individual travel modes: areas for walking (dimensions, design, capacities, construction and maintenance costs), areas for cycling (types, dimensions, design, capacities), roads and parking lots, railway tracks.
Properties of vehicles for public passenger transport: speeds, capacities, costs, energy properties, environmental footprint, "safety footprint".
Management of traffic areas in the city: rules, traffic lights and sensors, design recommendations.
Practical part: speed measurements (radar), observation and measurement of traffic flow (drone and image processing), redesign of public space.
Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
How and how much do we move around?
What types of travel options are available?
What are the capacities, environmental and carbon footprints and safety features?
Skills: use the speed.gun (radar) and video-image processing toools and software to analyze the traffic.
