Objectives and competences

The aim of the course is to prepare students to know and understand the concept, meaning, advantages, methods, challenges and good practices of digital transformation for various entities such as companies, organizations and government institutions. In the end, students should be able to analyze and judge if and how it makes sense to use the advanced digital technologies for the purpose of preparing a modern digital transformation.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Introduction to the concepts of digital transformation (DT), automation, digitization, digitalization, optimization, electronic business • DT-related and necessary digital infrastructure (networks, data spaces, cloud infrastructure, HPC) • Review and insight into important supporting technologies (e.g., artificial intelligence, cyber security, HPC) • Review and insight into technological solutions and services to achieve DT (X as a service) • Overview and learning of processes that are usually digitized. • Digital transformation of the economy (examples and good practices) • Digital transformation of the public sector and public administration (examples and good practices) • Knowledge and skills needed and profile types necessary to achieve DT. • Understanding the consequences of using different technologies for DT • Creation of a comprehensive digital strategy for the purpose of DT: assessment of the state of the company, strategy (Industry 4.0, cyber security, digital culture, digital personnel, business models and processes, data strategy, customer experience), development plan. • Steps and phases to achieve DT • Review of strategic documents (Strategies for the digital transformation of companies, Digital Slovenia, EU Digital Strategy).

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

On completion of this course the student will be able to • understand concepts related to digital transformation, • understand the advantages offered by digital transformation, • recognize the usefulness of different approaches, technologies and tools for achieving digital transformation, • plan the digital transformation process, • evaluate existing approaches and solutions for digital transformation. Transferable/Key skills and other attributes: • Communication skills: presentation of digital transformation concepts. • Use of information technology: use of software tools for planning digital transformation. • Organizational skills: organizing the process of planning, evaluating, and implementing digital transformation. Definition of roles and distribution of work in the group. • Teamwork: cooperation in interdisciplinary research and development teams.
