Objectives and competences

The objective of this course is to make students understand the practical usage of language and speech technologies. Students will develop the competence of comprehending language and speech technologies tools, understanding the function of applications with built-in language and speech technologies, and critically using such applications.

Content (Syllabus outline)

What solutions are behind the AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT)? The answer to this is provided by language and speech technologies: - Introduction: human-machine communication, usage scenarios, language and speech technologies building blocks. Usage and background of ChatGPT and other LLM tools. - Speech technologies' methods: sound and speech, automatic speech recognition, speaker detection, automatic speech synthesis, and acoustic sound classification. - Corpora and types of corpora. - Different types of corpus annotation (tokenization, lemmatization, morphosyntactic tagging, syntactic annotation, named entities...). - Search with corpora. - Language technologies' methods: language model, morphological tagging, syntactic parsing, semantics, and disambiguation. - Speech technologies usage: technical sciences, linguistics, media, medicine,... - Language technologies usage: correcting spelling errors, text classification, text mining, automatic text summarization, question answering, machine translation, sentiment analysis.

On completion of this course the student will be able to: - describe the speech and language technologies' buidling blocks, - present the possibilites how to apply speech and language technologies, - critically evaluate the application of language and speech technologies.
