The more knowledge we have, the stronger we are. The guiding principle of the University of Maribor as a scientific and educational institution is the dissemination and enrichment of knowledge. Science, which strengthens and promotes development and social progress, is transferred to young people in the premises of 17 faculties through university teachers and colleagues, thereby preparing them for successful integration into society and the world, which will face increasingly complex challenges in the future.

➡ In addition to study programmes, the University of Maribor offers many opportunities for further study:

👉 during studies (my.um.si > Student hub UM and dogodki.um.si),

👉 after studies (my.um.si > After-Study Opportunities).

About 14.500 students are currently studying at the University of Maribor, of which about 14% are international! We are committed to developing a culture of quality, which we see as the starting point for ensuring and developing the quality of teaching, research, and service.

➡ In the area of improving the quality of teaching, the University of Maribor has established a pedagogical community, the UM Pedagogical Network, together with a number of training courses for teaching staff to improve their didactic skills.

The educational system in the Republic of Slovenia is inclusive and easily accessible. However not everywhere in the world is like this. Up to 250 million children and adolescents worldwide do not attend school, and 763 million adults are illiterate, according to UNESCO estimates. The right to education, which is one of the fundamental human rights, is thus violated. The United Nations General Assembly designated January 24 as the International Day of Education to highlight the importance of education for world peace and development.

The sixth International Day of Education is celebrated under the theme:

... learning for lasting peace ...

The common theme underlines the importance of combating increased levels of violence and discriminatory behaviour, racism, xenophobia and, above all, hate speech.

As an institution, we believe that hate speech has no place in our society, and therefore we support the fight against this pressing social problem. At the University of Maribor, we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive, democratic, and collaborative environment.

On this International Day of Education, we would like to emphasise our commitment to creating an environment where education is a key tool for lasting peace, understanding between people and respect for human rights. It also marks a day when we recognise the power of education in preventing conflict, promoting gender equality, and guaranteeing fundamental freedoms.

At the University of Maribor, through educational activities, we help create a better future for individuals and society. By creating opportunities for the development of talent, by fostering critical thinking, by national and international cooperation, by quality and innovative teaching, we achieve the best results to reach the full potential of every student, who then strives and contributes to the creation of a more just, inclusive, and peaceful society.
