Among Shelves and Quiet Study Corners
The University of Maribor Library (UKM) is the central library of the University of Maribor and serves as an important support institution for students, researchers, and academic staff. UKM plays a key role in scientific research, teaching, professional, and artistic work. Its main mission is to ensure access to reliable information. Additionally, the library is a guardian of Slovenia’s cultural heritage, as it serves as the regional studies library for Maribor and northeastern Slovenia and as a secondary depository library for all Slovenian written production, meaning it permanently preserves the written and cultural heritage of the Republic of Slovenia.
It also connects other faculty libraries of the University of Maribor into a unified system. This means that you can access all services of the University of Maribor library system through a single account, as you have paid the fee for using the library services upon enrollment. This connection brings another advantage: students register only once, for example at their faculty library, and automatically become UKM users. Registration can also be done
online.
By presenting your student ID or e-ID within the mCOBISS app, you can borrow materials for home or reading rooms, access the ČUK reading room, use lockers, and other services. Numerous study spaces are available in reading rooms, study rooms, and areas designed for group work. UKM, in cooperation with faculty libraries, thus provides comprehensive support for successful studies at the University of Maribor.
Support That Makes Studying Easier
UKM offers access to rich collections of library materials, including books, brochures, serial publications, maps, atlases, sheet music, vinyl records, audio and video cassettes, microfilms and microfiches, diskettes, CDs, DVDs, printed materials, and electronic resources.
You can borrow materials for home or use them in reading rooms. As a library user, you can access numerous
electronic resources either on-site or
remotely via remote access. The collection of electronic resources will help you discover Slovenian and international professional and scientific findings needed for writing seminar papers or preparing for exams.
Don’t forget about the
Digital Library of the University of Maribor, which contains electronic materials of the university, including students’ theses that can inspire your research. The UKM
Digital Repository also helps, offering digitized old periodicals, monographs, manuscripts, and much more from UKM’s special collections. For literature searches, you can use the
UM:NIK - university search engine, which includes printed sources available in university libraries and millions of electronic resources.
Printed materials not available in our library can be borrowed through interlibrary loan from other Slovenian and foreign libraries. With your student ID, you can reserve or renew materials for free via the COBISS+ portal or the mCOBISS app.

The library offers a pleasant environment with numerous spaces for learning and research, where you can deepen your knowledge in peace. Spacious reading rooms and modern study corners enable effective learning without distractions. You can find your spot in the ČUK reading room, the Large Reading Room, private study rooms, and many other spaces. The ČUK reading room is very popular among students as it is open until midnight. For group work, you can reserve study rooms. For relaxation, play a game of chess or socialize in the Sova café. Music lovers can enjoy the Clavinova piano and the Beatnik music chair.
Throughout the academic year, the library organizes various
learning sessions for students, such as workshops on library-information and cultural-art education. You’ll benefit from learning how to use citation tools like EndNote, the BrowZine app for finding scientific journals and full-text articles, and other tools that can help you study more successfully.
If you need additional help, experienced librarians are available through online tutoring sessions. You can book an appointment via an
online form. For study assistance, you can also contact an information specialist responsible for your subject area.
UKM also holds special collections, such as music and film collections, cartographic materials, ephemera, manuscripts, rare books, old periodicals, and a librarian collection for research purposes. The library also features the Austrian Reading Room and Swiss Corner, as well as separate spaces for the Rudolf Maister and Janko Glazer libraries. In the study room of Dr. Zora Janžekovič, you’ll find anatomical models useful for those needing in-depth knowledge of human anatomy.
You can also attend numerous cultural events and exhibitions at the library. In addition to literary and other events and exhibition openings, we organize Student October every year, featuring traditional events such as the discarded materials fair, music-literary evenings, and chess tournaments.
